Building a Simple Nighttime Skincare Routine

While your morning routine focuses on protection, your nighttime routine is about repair. Skin cell turnover and collagen production both increase while you sleep, which makes evening the best time to introduce treatment-focused ingredients like retinol.

The Core Nighttime Steps

Double Cleanse (if you wear makeup or sunscreen) — Start with an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup and SPF, followed by a gentle water-based cleanser to clean the skin itself. If you don't wear makeup, a single gentle cleanse is fine.

Treatment Step — This is where actives like retinol, exfoliating acids, or targeted serums come in, applied 2-4 nights a week depending on your skin's tolerance.

Moisturizer — A slightly richer formula than your daytime moisturizer helps support the skin's repair process overnight and prevents water loss while you sleep.

Optional: Facial Oil or Occlusive — For very dry skin, sealing in moisture with a facial oil or occlusive balm as the last step can prevent overnight water loss, especially in dry climates or during winter.

Keeping It Simple

You don't need seven products to have an effective nighttime routine. A cleanser, a treatment step (used a few nights a week, not necessarily every night), and a moisturizer covers the essentials for most skin types.

Final Thoughts

Consistency at night matters more than product count. A simple three-step routine followed every evening will outperform an elaborate seven-step routine used sporadically.
